IPL betting racket busted in Goa, three arrested with electronic gadgets seized

Porvorim, Apr 11: In a major crackdown on illegal online gambling, Goa Police arrested three individuals for operating a betting racket during the high-voltage IPL match between Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The arrests took place late on April 10, extending into the early hours of April 11, at Villa No 29, Sun Escora Residential Complex, located in Socorro, Bardez. Acting on specific intelligence, Police Sub Inspector Sitaram Malik of Porvorim Police Station led the operation and filed the state complaint after catching the accused red-handed while accepting live bets via mobile phones and online platforms.

The arrested accused have been identified as:

• Vijay Kumar Manwani (45) from Rewa, Madhya Pradesh
• Musa Shaikh (29) from Murshidabad, West Bengal
• Sudesh Kumar Otwani (25) also from Rewa, Madhya Pradesh

The police seized seven mobile phones, one laptop, and other accessories used in the illegal operation, collectively valued at approximately Rs 2.1 lac.

All three accused have been booked under the Goa, Daman, and Diu Public Gambling Act. Authorities are now probing further into the betting network to uncover possible links and accomplices involved in this illegal operation.

Speaking on the bust, a police official stated, “With the IPL season in full swing, such illegal activities tend to surge. We are committed to taking strict action against those involved in online gambling and betting rackets.”

The case highlights the vigilance of Goa Police in curbing illegal activities and maintaining law and order during high-profile events like the Indian Premier League.
