Man killed in accidental shooting during wild animal hunt in Sattari; one arrested

Valpoi, Apr 12: In a tragic incident on Thursday evening, a man from Desaiwada in Advoi-Sattari lost his life after being shot during a hunting trip at a cashew orchard in Fulasaryo-Advoi. Police have arrested one person in connection with the incident.

According to SDPO DySP Jivba G Dalvi, the deceased, Hemant Desai, had accompanied the accused, Abhijit Desai (34) of Thadebhatla in Dodamarg, Maharashtra, on a hunting expedition targeting wild animals in the forested area. The duo had reportedly reached the orchard around 6:30 pm.

At approximately 9 pm, Abhijit allegedly loaded a firearm and fired a shot which tragically struck Hemant, resulting in severe injuries. Despite efforts, Hemant succumbed to his injuries.

The Valpoi police registered an offence based on a complaint lodged by Hemant's uncle. A case has been filed under Sections 105 read with 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Sections 3, 25, and 27 of the Arms Act, and Section 9 of the Wild Life Protection Act.

Abhijit Desai was taken into custody and subsequently arrested. During the panchanama, conducted with the assistance of a forensic team, police recovered and attached the firearm used in the incident, an empty cartridge, and a scooter from the scene.

Police sources revealed that the firearm used in the incident was unlicensed.

Valpoi Police Inspector Viddesh Shirodkar is leading the investigation under the supervision of Bicholim SDPO DySP Jivba Dalvi and SP (North) Akshat Kaushal, IPS.

Further investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and whether the act was deliberate or accidental.
