Chandor, Apr 12: Cuncolim MLA and Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on Friday conducted an inspection of the police outpost at Chandor with a firm resolve to upgrade it into a full-fledged police station to better serve the local community and address the rising crime rate in the region.
Speaking to media during his visit, Alemao said that the need for a proper police station in Chandor has become urgent in view of increasing incidents of thefts and break-ins, both in urban centres and rural areas of Goa.
“Nowadays, the crime rate has gone up in Goa. It was shocking to learn that four shops in the heart of Panaji city were broken into by miscreants. Not only in cities, but even houses and shops in villages are being targeted by robbers. This is why Chandor, which is our heritage village, urgently needs a full-fledged police station,” he said.
At present, locals are forced to travel nearly 8 to 9 kilometres to the Maina-Curtorim police station to register complaints, which Alemao said is not feasible for many. “Due to the lack of proper facilities, people who approach the Chandor police outpost are often redirected to Maina-Curtorim. This not only wastes time but also adds to their financial burden,” he noted.
Alemao underlined that the proposed police station would not only improve law enforcement response time but also meet a long-standing demand of the people. “Our aim is to set up a comprehensive law enforcement facility that matches the needs of the community. It will also support Chandor’s transformation into a heritage village by enhancing safety and infrastructure,” he added.
The inspection was carried out in the presence of local stakeholders and officials, where Alemao took note of the lack of basic facilities at the existing outpost. He assured that the project will be taken up on priority and has already instructed concerned officials to expedite all formalities to ensure the work is completed at the earliest.
The proposal has been welcomed by locals, who have long been demanding better policing infrastructure in the area.
