Major fire destroys over 40 labour sheds in Bengaluru’s Veerannapalya

Bengaluru, April 13: A massive fire broke out on Saturday evening in a cluster of labour sheds located near Veerannapalya, close to Nagawara, destroying more than 40 out of around 50 temporary structures.

According to personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services Department, no casualties have been reported.

The sheds were erected on an open plot next to a private school along Veerannapalya Main Road. As per officials from the Govindapura police station, the fire initially broke out in one shed and rapidly spread to the others due to the highly flammable materials used in their construction.

Most of the residents were able to escape before the fire intensified, thereby avoiding any loss of life.

“I was sitting with my friends when we noticed smoke emerging from the sheds. We rushed to the spot and tried to extinguish the flames using a water pump from a nearby crematorium, but the fire continued to spread. I then alerted the fire department,” said Darshan, a witness.

He added that water was also sourced from a nearby apartment building, and local water tankers were called in to support the firefighting efforts.

The fire was finally brought under control by 9 pm after a sustained operation by the fire brigade, with support from local residents and water tankers.

Govindapura police have registered a case and are conducting further investigations. “The exact cause of the fire is still unknown. A probe is underway,” said a police official.
