Mumbai, Apr 14: English actor Ben Whishaw is back as the voice of everyone’s favourite marmalade-loving bear in Paddington in Peru, the much-anticipated third instalment in the beloved film franchise. Ahead of its India release on April 18, Whishaw shared his thoughts on returning to the role, calling the film “very exciting, very funny, and genuinely moving.”
After the success of Paddington (2014) and Paddington 2 (2017), Whishaw admitted there was some pressure going into the third chapter. “You couldn’t help but feel a little apprehensive about what the next one might involve. There’s also the pressure of not repeating the same formula,” he said.
However, he praised the fresh approach of Paddington in Peru, describing it as a more adventurous turn for the franchise. “This one is far more of an adventure than the others. Paddington faces real jeopardy and risk,” he noted. “I was thrilled to be part of it.”
The film marks a significant shift in setting and tone. “Previously, Paddington has always been at Windsor Gardens, in the Browns’ home, his home. But this time, the Browns venture out into the wild, into the jungle, and into the unknown,” Whishaw explained. “Each character is challenged in some way, and they each discover something about themselves and their place in the family. It’s deeply moving to see how this journey brings them closer together.”
Whishaw also touched upon the universal appeal of Paddington. “He embodies optimism and unwavering kindness. No matter how many times he’s knocked down, he always bounces back. The films carry such a powerful spirit one of accepting difference, embracing kindness, and showing respect. That’s incredibly valuable,” he said.
Based on the stories by Michael Bond, Paddington in Peru continues the legacy of the iconic bear with a cast that includes Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, and new adventures in the lush landscapes of Peru.
Sony Pictures Entertainment India will release the film in theatres nationwide on April 18 in both English and Hindi.
