Los Angeles, Sep 13: Singer-songwriter Celine Dion made her much-awaited return to the stage, performing before a packed audience as she opened her 26-date residency at Plenitude Arena in Paris on Saturday.
The 58-year-old singer returned to live performance after a six-year hiatus, an emotional moment that left her in tears just moments into her opening song.
Dion paused as she became overwhelmed by the response from the audience. After wiping her eyes and taking a breath, she addressed the crowd and expressed her happiness at finally being back on stage.
“I had promised myself not to cry. I don't keep my promises. But I'm so happy to see you all. I missed you. I'm going to sing like you without crying,” she said.
“I made a promise to come back, to be back on stage. So here I am, singing for you and singing for me, singing live! Thank you so very much for your support, your patience and if I may say so, I am everything I am because you loved me,” she added.
Dion is among the most celebrated singers in contemporary music, known for her powerful voice, emotional delivery and exceptional vocal range.
Born in Charlemagne, Quebec, in 1968, she began performing professionally as a teenager before gaining international recognition during the 1990s.
Her breakthrough came with hits including ‘The Power of Love’, ‘Because You Loved Me’ and ‘It’s All Coming Back to Me Now’, establishing her as a global pop icon.
Her song ‘My Heart Will Go On’, featured in the film ‘Titanic’, became one of the most recognisable songs in popular culture and earned her several major awards. She also enjoyed a highly successful career in Las Vegas, where her residencies attracted large audiences.
In 2022, Dion was diagnosed with Stiff-Person Syndrome (SPS), a rare neurological disorder. It is generally considered an autoimmune condition in which the immune system interferes with the nervous system’s control of muscles.
Despite the health challenges that forced her away from the stage, Dion has continued to demonstrate resilience and a strong commitment to her music.
