Mangalore: Bajpe Protest Incident Turns Murkier – Cases Booked, Notices Served

Mangalore, Jan 19: On a complaint filed by police inspector, Dinakar Shetty of Bajpe police station, cases were registered against the governing council, convener, headmistress and other teachers of the school concerned, relating to an incident in which the children were instigated to hold protest on the road without prior permission.  The protest was held against removal of a road hump near the school.

Convener of Ansar School, Shariff, gram panchayat president, Sahul Hamid, Nissar, Arif, Hilltop Hanif, Ismail, as well as teachers, Sangeeta and Flora, have been named in the complaint. The complaint alleges that the concerned behaved rudely with the police, children were compelled to protest, and during stone pelting on police, sub-inspector, Anant Murdeshwar, and head constable, Suresh were injured, and police jeep was damaged.

Block education officer, Rajalakshmi, said that notices have already been served on the governing council of the school and headmistress, relating to the above incident. “We have sought clarification on their decision to send students out of the school to hold protest on the road illegally. The headmaster will also be questioned about calling up journalists and photographers over phone and talking to them indecently,” she added.

Sahul Hamid too has complained that the policemen had caned him and his brothers as well as school children, when they were protesting for retention of hump in front of the school. The complaint also mentions that Hifaz, a ninth standard student of the school, had died near petrol bunk in Bajpe as the hump was removed.

Congress leaders, Moideen Bawa, and Ivan D’Souza, visited the spot.
