Bengaluru, Apr 24: The Karnataka state government has taken a significant step towards implementing a Water Metro project for the first time in the state.

During a meeting of the Karnataka Inland Waterways Authority chaired by chief minister Siddaramaiah, the ‘Karnataka Inland Water Transport Policy 2024’ was unveiled. On this occasion, the chief minister approved the proposal for the Water Metro project to be launched in the Gurpur–Netravati rivers in Mangaluru.

Approval was also granted for the establishment of a Karnataka Waterways Training Centre in Mangaluru under the Sagarmala project.

The chief minister directed officials to submit proposals after reviewing land allocation and lease periods for rehabilitation and port-related operations, and also instructed the immediate eviction of encroachers.

In relation to the integrated development of the identified islands in Uttara Kannada district, Siddaramaiah directed the deputy commissioner to conduct a drone survey and submit a report within three months.

He also instructed officials to study and report on the functioning of ports in Andhra Pradesh, Visakhapatnam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat.
