Mangalore, Jan 20: Advocates belonging to the Mangalore Bar Association on Friday January 20 held a demonstration in the court premises to condemn the recent police atrocity against lawyers in Bangalore and to oppose the proposed Higher Education and Research Bill.

Amid shouts of slogans, S P Chengappa, president of Mangalore Bar Association addressed the protestors and said that the association strongly condemns the police atrocity on advocates.

Speaking further, he said that the proposed Higher Education and Research Bill 2011 by the union ministry of human resource development aims at intruding on the autonomy and independence of the legal profession, by bringing legal education under its ambit.

"The proposed bill directly affects the basic structure of the Advocates Act, 1961 under which total autonomy and independence was given to the bar council of India and state bar councils to regulate the legal profession and legal education," he said, and added that the bill proposed to have a national commission which would erode the powers and functions of the bar councils.

The demonstration was held as part of a nationwide protest against the Bill called by the Bar Council of India.

Advocates Ivan D’Souza, Purushottham Poojary, N Narasimha Gowda, Ganesh Shenoy K among others were present.
