London/New Delhi, Jun 12: A wave of grief swept across the world on Thursday after an Air India flight bound for London (AI171) crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport, sparking a large-scale emergency operation near the Meghaninagar area. The ill-fated aircraft was carrying over 240 passengers, including 169 Indians and 53 British nationals.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer voiced his deep sorrow, calling the crash “devastating.” In a statement on X, Starmer said, “The scenes emerging of a London-bound plane carrying many British nationals crashing in the Indian city of Ahmedabad are devastating. I am being kept updated as the situation develops, and my thoughts are with the passengers and their families at this deeply distressing time.”
The British government quickly responded to the unfolding situation. Defence Secretary David Lammy expressed his condolences, stating the UK was in contact with Indian authorities to gather information and extend support.

Prominent Conservative MP Priti Patel echoed the sentiment and urged the British government to work closely with India to assist British families. “This will be a worrying time for the families of those on board,” she said, emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts to support the victims.
Messages of solidarity poured in from beyond the UK as well.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky offered his condolences, saying, “My deepest condolences to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the entire people of India on this tragic day. Our thoughts are with all victims’ relatives and close ones in India, the UK, Portugal, and Canada.”
Russia’s Ambassador to India, Denis Alipov, described the crash as a “major catastrophe” and extended heartfelt sympathies to the victims’ families and the Government of India.
The incident has shocked the international community and raised urgent questions about the cause of the crash. Emergency response teams are continuing rescue and investigation operations, while both Indian and foreign authorities are working closely to support affected families.
