MMC demolishes two dangerous structures in Mapusa after rain triggers partial collapse

Mapusa, Jun 14: In a move aimed at ensuring public safety, the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) on Friday completed the demolition of a long-neglected bungalow near Krantiveer Chowk, which had partially collapsed due to heavy rains earlier in the day.

The bungalow had remained in a dilapidated state for years, with a part of it collapsing back in 2019. Despite repeated notices issued to the landlords, no action was taken, prompting the MMC to seek the district collector’s intervention.

Following the collector’s approval, the MMC began demolition on Wednesday using a PWD demolition squad. However, the drive was halted after part of the roof crashed onto a JCB, forcing the operator to stop work due to safety concerns.

On Friday morning, continued rain caused another section of the structure to collapse, raising immediate alarm. The MMC swiftly resumed the drive and razed the entire structure by evening.

“We followed due procedures before initiating the demolition. Given the risk to public safety, it was crucial to complete the process without delay,” said MMC Municipal Engineer Prashant Narvekar.

In a related action, MMC also demolished another dilapidated house near Paulo Garage in Shetyewaddo that was endangering a neighbouring property.
