Panaji, Jun 20: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a stern advisory for fisherfolk and small boat operators along the Goa and South Maharashtra coastline, urging them not to venture into the sea due to forecasted squally weather conditions. The warning, which remains in effect until June 20, comes amidst strong wind activity and rising wave conditions.

According to the IMD, wind speeds along and off the Goa coast are expected to reach 40-50 kmph, with gusts possibly touching 60 kmph within 75 km from the shoreline. These conditions are being closely monitored as the weather poses a potential threat to maritime safety.

Adding to the concern, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has also sounded a high wave alert for the Goa coastline. Waves are expected to surge to heights of 3.5 to 3.8 metres. Areas from Chapora to Panaji in North Goa are particularly at risk, with continued high wave activity forecast until June 20.

Authorities have further cautioned that coastal erosion and wave surges are likely in vulnerable areas, prompting small vessel operators to suspend operations temporarily. Locals and tourists have also been advised to stay away from the shore and avoid entering rough waters.

Despite the active warnings at sea, the southwest monsoon remains weak over Goa. On Thursday, the state experienced light to moderate showers at many locations, while isolated areas received moderate rainfall.

The IMD has predicted continued light to moderate rainfall across the state over the coming days, with the possibility of heavy showers at isolated spots until June 25.

Fisherfolk and coastal communities have been urged to remain alert and follow updates from the IMD and local authorities to ensure safety during this weather event.
