Mumbai, Jun 22: Ravi Chhabriya, who recently made his directorial debut with the comedy-mystery Detective Sherdil, shared insights into his filmmaking journey, experience working with Diljit Dosanjh, and the growing comparisons to the Hollywood hit Knives Out. The film, which also stars Boman Irani, Diana Penty, and Chunky Panday, premiered on ZEE5 on June 20 and has received a mixed response from viewers.
Chhabriya revealed his inspiration behind choosing Detective Sherdil as his first film. “We’ve grown up watching thrillers like Gupt and Byomkesh Bakshi. It had been a while since we had a great detective film in Indian cinema, and I wanted to bring that back in an entertaining way,” he said, adding that he and co-writer Ali had been developing the script for a while.

While speaking about the nerves that come with a debut, Ravi admitted, “Every day is a test—whether it's your first or tenth film. The key is to stay focused and trust your instincts. I was more excited than nervous, especially because of the preparation and rapport with the cast.”
Chhabriya heaped praise on leading man Diljit Dosanjh, calling him a “humble and giving” actor. “Diljit paaji never once made me feel pressured. He’s such a cuteheart! Our bond on set was easy and open. We made the film in under 32 days, and that kind of speed is only possible when the team truly connects.”
When reminded of filmmaker Imtiaz Ali’s remark that Shah Rukh Khan called Diljit the best actor in the country, Ravi wholeheartedly agreed. “It’s plus triple one on that! Paaji is an outstanding actor and so real, so humble. That realness reflects on screen. We both share a shy nature, so it was very natural for us to work closely and understand each other.”
Addressing the ongoing comparisons to Knives Out, Ravi clarified that there was no direct inspiration. “We were writing Detective Sherdil much earlier. I don’t even remember when we watched Knives Out. It’s a great film, and if someone compares your work to it, that’s a compliment in itself. But once people watch our film, they’ll see it’s very different.”
Calling the project his “baby,” Chhabriya concluded, “Every film is like your child, and each child is unique. I’ve edited this film with a modern touch to engage young viewers while keeping the soul intact. The treatment is fresh, and that’s what makes it special.”
Detective Sherdil is now streaming on ZEE5.
