Christ king PU College, Karkala celebrates Press Day, highlighting role of journalism in democracy

Karkala, Jul 10: Christ king Pre-University College, Karkala, observed Press Day with a meaningful celebration, the critical role of journalism in sustaining democracy. The event was graced by retired journalist Bipinchandra Pal from Nakre, who inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp.

Speaking on the occasion, Bipinchandra Pal emphasized, “The contribution of the press in upholding democracy is unparalleled. For journalists, journalistic ethics should be the only guiding principle. In today’s challenging media landscape, journalists must fearlessly and boldly report the truth. A journalist should belong to everyone, not to any individual or faction.”

Dr Peter Fernandes, a member of Christ king Education Trust, presided over the programme and said, “Journalists are the voice of the voiceless in society. Despite the overwhelming presence of social media, newspapers continue to retain credibility. Serving the public is the true essence of patriotism, and journalists are truly deserving of appreciation for fulfilling this role.”

Another guest, Mohammed Sharif, president of the Karkala Working Journalists Association, added, “Journalists must gather, analyze, and report news with accuracy and neutrality, without bias or prejudice, staying firmly on the path of journalistic integrity.”

On this occasion, senior journalist Satish H Shetty of Madhyamabimba newspaper was felicitated by the Christ king Education Trust for his significant contributions to journalism. While accepting the honour, Shetty shared insights from his career and experiences in reporting.

Journalists, reporters, and photojournalists from various media outlets were also recognized and honoured with tokens of appreciation.

The event was attended by Lakshmi Narayan Kamath, principal of the institution, Josna Snehalatha, headmistress of the High School section, Rudolph Kishore Lobo, headmaster of the Primary School, Vasant Kumar from Madhyamabimba and Swayam Times channel, and retired journalist Pradeep Nayak, among others.

Deepak, commerce lecturer, delivered the welcome address, while Umesh Bellippady, Kannada lecturer, anchored the programme. Meghashree, Mathematics lecturer, proposed the vote of thanks.
