Mumbai, Jul 12: Director James Gunn’s much-anticipated Superman has opened to glowing reviews and a solid start at the Indian box office, earning Rs 7 cr nett on its opening day. With positive word of mouth, the film is projected to collect around Rs 20 cr over the weekend, outpacing Rajkummar Rao’s latest release Maalik.

In comparison, Brad Pitt’s motorsport drama F1 earned Rs 5.5 cr on Day 1, while Superman still fell short of the opening figures of Jurassic World Rebirth, which made Rs 9.2 cr and crossed Rs 50 cr in its first week. It also couldn’t match Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which stormed theatres with a Rs 16.5 cr debut.

The superhero reboot recorded a 24.96% average occupancy on its first day, with footfalls significantly higher during the evening (26.97%) and night (38.66%) shows. Morning (15.62%) and afternoon (18.58%) shows were relatively modest.

Globally, Superman is soaring even higher. As per Deadline, it recorded the highest box office preview collection of 2025 so far, raking in $21 million. Although earlier reports speculated that Warner Bros. set a $700 million global benchmark, James Gunn later clarified that no such target had been officially declared.

Starring David Corenswet in the iconic red cape, Superman is the flagship launch in Gunn and Peter Safran’s ambitious relaunch of the DC Universe a move closely watched by both fans and industry insiders.

With a promising start and international buzz, all eyes are now on how the film performs through the weekend and beyond.
