Hyderabad, Jul 13: Legendary actor and former BJP legislator Kota Srinivasa Rao passed away early Sunday morning at the age of 83 after battling age-related health complications. He breathed his last at his residence in Filmnagar, Hyderabad, leaving behind a legacy cherished across generations and film industries.

The veteran actor is survived by his wife and two daughters. His declining health had recently come to public attention after a frail photo of him shared by producer Bandla Ganesh went viral, drawing an outpouring of concern and tributes from fans.

With a career that spanned more than four decades, Kota Srinivasa Rao acted in over 750 films across Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada cinema. Known for his distinctive voice, impeccable dialogue delivery, and powerful screen presence, he seamlessly portrayed a range of characters—from chilling villains to comic legends.

Born on July 10, 1942, in Kanakipadu, Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh, Kota began his journey as a stage actor before making his film debut in 1978 with Pranam Khareedu, which starred Chiranjeevi. He rose to fame with his role in Pratighatana (1985), establishing himself as a formidable on-screen antagonist.

A master of regional dialects and character nuances, Kota redefined villainy and comedy alike. His performances in films such as Aha! Naa Pellanta, Yamudiki Mogudu, Khaidi No. 786, Shiva, Yamaleela, Bommarillu, Athadu, and Race Gurram remain etched in the memories of audiences.

He formed an iconic comic duo with actor Babu Mohan, appearing together in around 60 films, and were often considered a surefire box office formula in the 90s and early 2000s.

Kota was also active in politics and served as a BJP MLA from Vijayawada East constituency between 1999 and 2004. His public life was marked by deep cultural engagement and a commitment to the arts.

In 2015, he was conferred with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, for his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema. He also received multiple Nandi Awards during his illustrious career.

The actor endured personal tragedy in 2010 when he lost his only son, Kota Venkata Anjaneya Prasad, in a road accident.

News of his demise has led to an outpouring of grief from film personalities, political leaders, and fans across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Tributes have poured in, celebrating his unparalleled contributions to Indian cinema and the indelible mark he leaves behind.
