Mumbai, Jul 30: Ajay Devgn’s upcoming comedy-drama Son of Sardaar 2, slated for release on August 1, is reportedly facing major challenges in securing screens across the country. Directed by Vijay Kumar Arora, the film is struggling to get sufficient show slots, particularly in single-screen theatres and non-national cinema chains, ahead of its box office clash with Dhadak 2.
As per reports, the distributors of Son of Sardaar 2 have asked exhibitors for 60 percent of total screen time. However, most cinema owners are unwilling to provide more than 35 percent. Some single screens have offered just two shows per day, while non-national chains have also limited the allocation. This has led to tense discussions with multiplex chains like PVRInox, as the film’s team continues negotiations to increase its presence.

The ongoing box office success of Saiyaara and Mahavatar Narsimha has further complicated matters. Both films continue to draw large crowds, and exhibitors are reluctant to reduce their showtimes in favour of new releases. This resistance has directly impacted Son of Sardaar 2, which was originally aiming for a 3,500-screen release but may now have to settle for around 2,500.
In contrast, Dhadak 2 has adopted a more strategic approach, opting for a controlled release across 1,000 screens, mainly in urban areas. This has helped the film avoid direct competition for theatre slots, unlike Son of Sardaar 2, which is pushing for a wider rollout.
With just days left before release, final decisions on screen allocation are expected by July 31. Despite the setback, the makers remain hopeful that last-minute talks with exhibitors could improve the situation. The film’s success now hinges on Devgn’s star power and audience turnout, even as it battles stiff competition at the box office.
