Fear of NRC drives 63-year-old Kolkata man to suicide

Kolkata, Aug 4: A 63-year-old man, Dilip Kumar Saha, was found hanging in his residence at Anandapally West in Kolkata’s Regent Park area on Sunday morning, with his family blaming fear over the National Register of Citizens (NRC) for the tragedy.

Saha, who worked as a non-teaching staffer at a private school in Dhakuria, had reportedly been living in constant anxiety over being deported to Bangladesh, despite having valid identity documents. Originally from Nawabganj in Dhaka, he had migrated to Kolkata with his family in 1972.

According to police, Saha’s wife Arati raised the alarm after repeated calls to his room went unanswered. With help from a relative, the door was forced open, and he was found hanging from a ceiling fan. A suicide note was recovered from the room, and initial investigations suggest that his fear of deportation may have driven him to take the extreme step.

“He kept telling us he feared being sent to a detention camp and pushed back to Bangladesh, where he had no one,” said Arati Saha. “He had no other worries in life. He was stressed about the NRC for a long time.”

Local MLA and Power Minister Arup Biswas visited the grieving family and criticized the central government's policies. “This is the result of the Centre’s anti-people approach. The fear they have spread in the name of NRC is destroying lives,” he said.

Police said the matter is under investigation.
