BITS Pilani installs 600 CCTV cameras after student deaths, police step up security review

Vasco, Sep 13: Amid rising concerns over student safety following a series of tragic deaths, Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani has completed installation of nearly 600 CCTV cameras across its vast campus, including hostel corridors and common areas.

With over 4,500 students and 22 hostels, the project brings every hostel floor and corner under round-the-clock surveillance. “Earlier, cameras were only at hostel gates. Now every corridor and common space is covered,” an institute official said, adding that discussions on the plan had begun much before the recent incidents but were delayed after students voiced privacy concerns.

The December death of a student accelerated the decision. Installation began in March and was completed during the summer break. The management said the initiative aims to create a safer and more accountable environment, while reassuring anxious parents.

Despite the new surveillance network, two more deaths have occurred on campus, prompting calls for stronger student support systems, mental-health programmes and stricter discipline.

Senior police officials, including DIG Varsha Sharma and SP South Tikam Singh Verma, have since visited the campus to review security, interact with staff, and advise on stricter checks at all entry and exit points, including parcel screening.

Authorities said technology alone cannot ensure safety, but the enhanced security infrastructure is expected to aid investigations and prevent untoward incidents as BITS Pilani works to address broader issues of student welfare and campus discipline.
