UAE joins global nuclear energy dialogue at Paris Conference

Abu Dhabi, Sep 19: The UAE, led by Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, took part in the Roadmaps to New Nuclear 2025 ministerial conference hosted at the OECD headquarters in Paris on September 18-19.

The event, organised by South Korea and the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), brought together ministers from over 30 countries and executives from 50 global companies to discuss strategies for advancing nuclear energy, supply chain resilience, workforce development and financing.

Al Mazrouei, delivering the UAE’s statement, said the country’s participation reflects its commitment to clean energy transition and international cooperation. He pointed to the success of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, which now produces 40 terawatt hours annually — meeting about a quarter of UAE’s electricity needs while cutting millions of tonnes of carbon emissions.

Highlighting the COP28 agreement in Dubai to triple global nuclear capacity by 2050, Al Mazrouei called for “turning commitments into projects” backed by sustainable financing and strong international partnerships.

He also revealed that the UAE is exploring advanced nuclear technologies, including small modular reactors, to support hydrogen production and energy supply for critical industries.

On the sidelines, the UAE delegation met with Rafael Grossi, Director-General of the IAEA. Senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, and Emirates Nuclear Energy Company were part of the delegation.
