Three food combos that hurt your gut, warns gastroenterologist

New Delhi, Sep 25: Good digestion is shaped not only by what you eat but also by how you pair foods, warns Dr Shubham Vatsya, Consultant Gastroenterologist. He highlights three everyday combinations that quietly tax the gut, triggering bloating, gas and sluggish digestion.

Fast food with fizzy drinks

Burgers and fries washed down with a chilled soda may be popular, but the combo overloads the stomach with refined fats, preservatives and carbonated gas. The cold drink also slows enzyme activity, raising the risk of indigestion and acid reflux, while disturbing the gut microbiome.

Milk with fish

Ayurveda traditionally discourages this pairing. Fish digests quickly, milk much slower; together they can linger in the gut, causing bloating, mild indigestion or even histamine-type reactions in sensitive people.

Fruit right after a meal

Fruits digest faster than proteins and fats. Eaten immediately after a heavy meal, they can ferment in the gut, producing gas and cramps. Dr Vatsya advises eating fruit alone, ideally 30 minutes before other foods.

Avoiding these unhealthy food pairings can keep digestion smooth, maintain a balanced gut environment and boost overall well-being.
