Colombo, Feb 25: The New Zealand national cricket team took a decisive step towards the semifinals of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 with a commanding 61-run victory over the Sri Lanka national cricket team in their Super Eights clash at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Wednesday, Feb 25.
Batting first, New Zealand posted a competitive total of 168 for 7 in 20 overs, building steady partnerships and accelerating at crucial moments. Their bowlers then delivered a clinical performance to restrict Sri Lanka to 107 for 8, sealing a comprehensive win.

Rachin Ravindra starred with both bat and ball, contributing vital runs before returning to dismantle the Sri Lankan middle order with a four-wicket haul. Mitchell Santner also played a key role with a brisk knock that helped push the total beyond Sri Lanka’s reach.
Chasing 169, Sri Lanka struggled to gain momentum and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. The mounting required rate and disciplined Kiwi bowling attack ensured there was no way back for the hosts.
With this victory, New Zealand strengthened their semifinal prospects, while the defeat ended Sri Lanka’s campaign in the tournament.
