Mumbai, Sep 26: Cataracts — a clouding of the eye’s natural lens — remain a leading cause of vision loss worldwide, especially among older adults. While ageing and genetics play major roles, experts say dietary habits can significantly influence cataract development.
A study published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) revealed that people with diets high in sodium and fatty acids showed a higher risk of developing cataracts compared to those with healthier eating patterns. Certain foods are known to increase oxidative stress, inflammation, or blood sugar levels, all of which can damage the lens of the eye over time.
Experts warn that frequent consumption of processed and fried foods, sugary snacks and beverages, red and processed meats, high-sodium items, refined grains, and excessive alcohol can accelerate cataract formation. These foods promote oxidative stress, raise blood sugar levels, or disturb the eye’s fluid balance, gradually affecting lens clarity.
Eye specialists recommend replacing processed meals with fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats while limiting alcohol and salt intake. A balanced diet, combined with lifestyle moderation, can help maintain clearer vision and healthier eyes in the long run.
