Mangaluru: Konkani Bhasha Mandal Karnataka launches initiative to support senior writers

Media Release

Mangaluru, Oct 20: A significant initiative of the Konkani Bhasha Mandal Karnataka to identify, visit, collect details and explore ways to support senior Konkani writers, journalists, and organizers was launched at the residence of Bellur resident and former editor of Kanik newspaper, Avil Rasquinha.

Instead of a traditional lamp-lighting, the program began with a reading from a published book. KBMK’s new president, Raymond D’Cunha Taccode, who inaugurated the event, said, “For thousands of writers who emerged, Avil was a light. Reading literature has been his guiding lamp, which is why I chose to begin with a book reading,” he remarked.

Chief guest Praveen Tauro, the President of the Daiji Dubai Literary Organization, Mangaluru Unit said, “Instead of waiting for our elders to come to us, it is better that we go to them and check on their well-being. Konkani Bhasha Mandal Karnataka deserves praise for this noble gesture.”

Avil Rasquinha, who was the editor of the widely circulated Kanik Konkani newspaper in Mangalore during the 1970s, was felicitated and spoke on the occasion.

He said, “At a time when I thought people had forgotten me, this recognition from the Konkani Bhasha Mandal Karnataka is commendable. Konkani institutions must take up such initiatives. They must become the backbone of those who are interested in the language. An effort should be made to gather information to seek financial support and government benefits. This will ensure grants are put to good use.” He appreciated the KBMK President’s visionary plan as one for the revival of the community.

Former KBMK President K. Vasanth Rao, who presided over the event, said that KBMK has now been given an opportunity for revival. “We have taken a vow to conduct programs beneficial to the people. We expect the public to support us,” he added.

A poetry session (Kavigoshti) was held under the leadership of senior poet Juliette Fernandes.

Edward Lobo from Thokkottu entertained the audience with mimicry.

Poets Anita Shenoy, Richie Pereira, Naveen Kulshaker, Mariette Rasquinha, Maria Pinto Padil, Edward Lobo Thokkottu, Raymond D’Cunha Taccode, Jossy Pinto Kinnigoli, and Avil Rasquinha presented their poems.

Melisha Fernandes performed Konkani songs.

CA Ashith Rasquinha, CA Carol Rasquinha, Linet Menezes, and Cyril Lobo extended their support.

The event began with a welcome by Raymond D’Cunha and concluded with a vote of thanks by Mariette Rasquinha. The event was coordinated by Jossy Pinto.
