US leaders join in Diwali festivities, highlighting unity and cultural pride

Washington, Oct 20: Prominent figures across the American political spectrum, including senior officials from the Trump administration and both major parties, extended warm Diwali greetings, celebrating the festival as a symbol of unity, light, and cultural heritage.

FBI Director Kash Patel, the first Indian-American to lead the bureau, marked his first Diwali in office with a message on X, calling it a celebration of “good triumphing over evil.” Patel, who took his oath on the Bhagavad Gita earlier this year, noted the global significance of the festival and its resonance across Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and Buddhist communities.

Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, a rising Republican figure, also posted, “Happy Diwali! May the light prevail over darkness,” echoing the festival’s central theme.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott hosted a Diwali celebration at the Governor’s Mansion in Austin, joined by India’s Consul General D.C. Manjunath. The Consulate General of India in Houston thanked Abbott for upholding this tradition and fostering a sense of unity with the Indo-American community.

Meanwhile, Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna and Republican Congressman Pete Sessions issued festive greetings, while Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick and Suzan DelBene joined local Diwali events to celebrate with the Indian diaspora.

As Diwali continues to gain visibility in the U.S., the bipartisan participation reflects the growing cultural footprint of Indian-Americans and underscores Diwali’s message of hope and harmony in a divided world.
