Washington, Oct 24: US President Donald Trump on Thursday announced an immediate halt to all trade negotiations with Canada, citing a controversial advertisement aired by the Ontario government. The ad, featuring former US President Ronald Reagan speaking about tariffs, prompted Trump to accuse Canada of "egregious behaviour" and interference in US affairs.
The ad, which drew from a 1987 radio address by Reagan, warned that high tariffs could hurt American workers, trigger retaliation from foreign countries, and harm businesses. Trump claimed that the video was designed to influence the US Supreme Court’s upcoming ruling on the legality of his sweeping global tariffs.

Trump has already imposed a 35% levy on Canadian imports, though exemptions exist under the USMCA trade agreement. In response to the ad, he posted on Truth Social: “Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED.”
The Ronald Reagan Foundation stated that the Ontario government had used “selective audio and video” without permission, misrepresenting Reagan’s message. Meanwhile, Ontario Premier Doug Ford defended the campaign, saying the province would continue opposing American tariffs on Canada.
The advertisement, part of a $75 million Canadian campaign, aired on mainstream US channels. Trump’s tariffs, especially on metals and automobiles, have already impacted Canadian industries, leading to job losses and economic strain. This latest dispute further escalates tensions between the two North American neighbours.
