Winter session of Karnataka Assembly to be held in Belagavi from Dec 8: Basavaraj Horatti

Dharwad, Oct 26: The annual winter session of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly has been decided to be held in Belagavi from December 8, Legislative Council chairman Basavaraj Horatti said.

Speaking to the media on Saturday, he stated that he will meet the Belagavi deputy commissioner next week regarding the session. “I have already discussed this matter with chief minister Siddaramaiah, and he has also agreed,” he added.

Regarding the legislators, Horatti said there is no seriousness among them. “MLAs from North Karnataka rarely talk about development issues, whereas those from South Karnataka do. Every Wednesday and Thursday, a schedule is fixed for discussions on issues of North Karnataka. But no MLA speaks about it. I will circulate a notice to the MLAs over two days to ensure that discussions about North Karnataka are not neglected this time. I will even provide the points in writing to the members of the Legislative Council,” he said.

He expressed concern over the state of democracy, adding, “As long as there are people giving and taking money to vote, it is difficult to focus on development. The time has to change, but it is not in our hands. MLAs who ask questions leave within a minute, making it difficult to discuss development.”

On the issue of change of guard in state, Horatti remarked, “I don’t know whether it will happen in November or December. Those involved in the change or making it happen are present, and our job is just to observe. Somehow, these interferences don’t seem right to us. Day after day, the media covers only their issues. Serious problems are ignored, and only their discussions are happening. Whoever it may be, unnecessary discussions should not happen.”

Horatti urged legislators to focus on tasks that benefit the people of the state, adding, “It is my duty as Speaker to tell them this.”

Commenting on personal attacks between politicians, Horatti said, “The insults between Pratap Singh and Pradeep Eshwar are not appropriate. Would humane people speak like this? Legislators should set an example and learn what they should speak about.”

Expressing disappointment over the lack of decorum, he further added, “There is no courtesy among MLAs to do good for society.”
