Mangaluru: St Aloysius PU College celebrates 146th Annual Sports Meet

Mangaluru, Nov 1: Sports play an integral role in the holistic development of students, fostering both physical fitness and mental well-being. The 146th Annual Sports Meet of St Aloysius Pre-University College was a spectacular celebration of athletic excellence, teamwork, and the true spirit of sportsmanship.

The event commenced with a grand parade featuring students from 62 batches, along with cadets from the NCC Army, Navy, and Air Wing, and contingents from the three extension services. The chief guest, Shreema Priyadarshini, an international-level athlete, received the salute of honour and inaugurated the meet alongside the rector of St Aloysius Institutions, Fr Melwin Pinto SJ. The torch run that followed symbolized unity and determination, igniting the spirit of competition among participants.

In her inspiring address, Shreema Priyadarshini shared her personal journey, highlighting how unwavering support and guidance helped her pursue her goals. She emphasized that success requires both hunger and determination, as this inner drive empowers one to overcome challenges and achieve greatness. Encouraging the students, she urged them to persevere and never give up, reminding that sports not only lead to victory but also reveal one’s true character when guided by the right mentorship. She concluded her speech by formally declaring the Annual Sports Meet 2025 open.

Fr Melwin Pinto SJ, in his address, underscored the importance of motivating every student to reach their fullest potential. He urged the students to strive for excellence and bring laurels to the institution at both national and international levels. The oath-taking ceremony, led by the sports secretary, Anyu Shetty, reaffirmed the participants’ commitment to fair play and the true spirit of sportsmanship.

The day unfolded with a series of thrilling track and field events, showcasing remarkable talent, endurance, and teamwork. Enthusiastic participation from both teaching and non-teaching staff added to the spirit of camaraderie and collective celebration.

During the closing ceremony, the principal, Fr Clifford Sequeira SJ, emphasized the importance of physical activities in nurturing both mind and body. He highlighted that true education lies in the formation of mind and heart, preparing students to face challenges with courage, grace, and perseverance in both victory and defeat. He further encouraged everyone to uphold the spirit of unity, reminding that each participant is a victor in their own right, and formally declared the Annual Sports Meet closed.

The prize winners were honoured on the occasion. Batch 2 secured the overall first place in the I PUC category, while batch 8 emerged as the overall first place winner in the II PUC category.

The event was graced by Fr Anthony Derrick SJ, campus minister, vice principals, Muralikrishna GM and Vilma Fernandes, deans, Kiran Shetty and Inas Dais, physical directors, Naveen Kumar and Usha AJ.

Alwyn Saldanha, sports coordinator welcomed the gathering, Niha Fahim, department of chemistry compered the programme. The 146th Annual Sports Meet was a resounding success, reflecting the college’s unwavering commitment to nurturing physical fitness, discipline, and excellence through sports.
