Sydney, Nov 1: Team India batter Shreyas Iyer has been discharged from a Sydney hospital after receiving treatment for a spleen injury sustained during India’s third ODI victory over Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) last Saturday.

Officials from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Iyer is “stable and recovering well” after undergoing a minor medical procedure to stop internal bleeding caused by a lacerated spleen. The injury occurred when the 30-year-old fell awkwardly while taking a running catch to dismiss Alex Carey.

Iyer, who completed the stunning catch while sprinting backward with the flight of the ball, immediately clutched his side and was seen in visible discomfort. He left the field and was rushed to a local hospital, where he received prompt medical care.

“The BCCI medical team, along with specialists in Sydney and India, are pleased with his recovery, and he has been discharged from the hospital today,” the BCCI said in an official statement on Saturday.

“The BCCI extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr Koroush Haghighi and his team in Sydney, along with Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, for ensuring Shreyas received the best treatment for his injury,” the statement added.

Iyer will continue to stay in Sydney for follow-up consultations and will return to India once doctors clear him to travel.

The right-hander, who scored a fluent 61 runs in the second ODI in Adelaide, was not included in India’s T20 squad for the ongoing five-match series against Australia.

India, who lost the ODI series 2–1, are currently 1–0 down in the T20 leg after a four-wicket defeat in the second match in Melbourne on Friday. The third T20I will be played in Hobart on Sunday.
