Thrissur, Nov 3: Malayalam cinema legend Mammootty, 74, further cemented his iconic status by clinching the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for his compelling portrayal of Kodumon Potty in Rahul Sadasivan’s acclaimed Bhramayugam.

This accolade marks Mammootty’s 12th Kerala State Award overall and his eighth for Best Actor—a remarkable feat reflecting a career that spans more than five decades and over 400 films across Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi cinema.

In Bhramayugam, a psychological period drama, Mammootty’s nuanced performance was praised for its emotional depth, subtlety, and commanding screen presence, reaffirming his reputation as one of Indian cinema’s most versatile and respected actors. Known for blending commercial appeal with artistic integrity, Mammootty continues to take on challenging roles, earning both critical and popular acclaim.

The 55th Kerala State Film Awards, announced on Monday by Cultural Affairs Minister Saji Cherian, celebrated the richness of contemporary Malayalam cinema.

Manjummel Boys, directed by Chidambaram, emerged as a major winner, securing Best Film and Best Director, along with accolades for cinematography (Shaiju Khalid), art direction (Ajayan Chalissery), sound design (Shijin Melvin), and lyrics (Vedan). Chidambaram credited the victory to the “perfect team effort” and acknowledged the contribution of producers, cast, and real-life friends who inspired the story.

Actor Soubin Shahir, who won Best Character Actor for his role in Manjummel Boys, expressed his delight at the recognition for the film’s ensemble. Lyricist Vedan, currently out on bail in a sexual assault case, also expressed satisfaction that his work was acknowledged.

The Best Actress award went to Shamla Hamsa for her performance in Feminichi Fathima, a recognition she described as “unexpected but deeply rewarding” given the strong competition.

With top honours spread across Bhramayugam, Manjummel Boys, and Feminichi Fathima, this year’s awards highlighted the creative diversity and evolving strength of Malayalam cinema.

Veteran actor Prakash Raj, who chaired the jury, praised the selection process, noting, “It was a privilege to witness the creative journeys these films represent and to be part of celebrating such rich storytelling in Malayalam cinema.”
