Activists protest in Goa, urge Marriott to honour cage-free egg pledge

Panaji, Nov 28: Activists from Mercy For Animals India Foundation staged a dramatic protest outside the Goa Marriott hotel, accusing Marriott International of failing to meet its global commitment to source 100% cage-free eggs by the end of 2025.

Demonstrators, blindfolded and dressed in bathrobes, stood beside volunteers posing as hens trapped in cramped battery cages, with blood-stained egg crates symbolising cruelty in industrial egg production. Protesters held placards reading “Marriott, Uphold Your Promise: Go Cage-Free” and “Marriott Is Failing on Their Cage-Free Commitment.”

The organisation said that more than 40 crore hens across India continue to suffer in battery cages due to unfulfilled commitments by global hospitality chains.

“Marriott had 17 years to fulfil its commitment but hasn’t reported any progress in India,” said Kushal Samaddar, organising coordinator at Mercy For Animals India Foundation. “With just 30 days left in 2025, Marriott remains silent despite its vast resources.”

In 2018, Marriott pledged to transition to a 100% cage-free egg supply across its 9,100 properties worldwide by 2025. However, the group claims there has been no reported progress across Marriott’s 158 hotels in India, nor any roadmap for achieving the goal.

Mercy For Animals said it is stepping up global pressure to ensure Marriott delivers on its promise to end the use of eggs sourced from hens kept in extreme confinement.
