Mangaluru, Dec 3: Security personnel at the district prison here detained a man after allegedly discovering MDMA concealed inside a toothpaste tube he had brought for an undertrial inmate. The suspect was later handed over to the Barke police for further investigation.

According to a complaint filed by prison superintendent Sharanabasappa, the arrested person has been identified as Ashiq, a resident of Urva Store.

On Dec 1 at around 12.45 pm, Ashiq had arrived at the prison to visit Anvith, an undertrial inmate. He had brought 40 packets of biscuits, one packet of mixture, one packet of chakuli and one tube of toothpaste as items to be given to the inmate.

KSISF personnel Shashikumar Moolinmane and Shekhar D K, who were on duty at the time, conducted a routine inspection using body-worn cameras and standard security equipment. During the check, they noticed something suspicious inside the toothpaste tube.

The officials immediately alerted officer Kiran Ambiga, who opened the tube for detailed verification. Inside, they found two pieces of plastic straw and a small plastic pouch. When assistant commandant inspected the contents, they found white, crystal-like powder suspected to be MDMA.

During questioning, Ashiq reportedly told officials that a person near the photocopy shop in front of the prison had handed him the bakery items and instructed him — allegedly on the directions of Sachin Talapady — to deliver them to the undertrial inmate Anvith.

Barke police have registered a case in this regard.
