Bangalore, Feb 20: The Karnataka Goan Association (KGA) celebrated the “Goa Carnaval” on Saturday February 18 at the Indian Gymkhana Grounds, Cox Town, Bangalore.

The Goan Carnival is one of the biggest events in Goa and the KGA each year brings in the spirit of the carnival to all who are away from their homeland.

The Carnival is a tradition and celebration of merry making and feasting before the beginning of the period of Lent which is a time of sacrifice and prayer.

The KGA carnival was the place to be! Guests were asked to come dressed in colours of red and orange for this colourful extravaganza.

This time around there were five floats spanning across various age groups all dressed in vibrant, colourful costumes depicting the Goan culture and themes from countries like Brazil & Portugal where the carnival has its roots. The groups included children (10 yrs and below); Pre-Teens (11-15 yrs); Youth (16-27 yrs); Adults (28-59 yrs) and Evergreens (60 yrs and above).

Each floats was unique and had a theme to boast of. From themes such as Big Fat Wedding to Save Wildlife to Goa, the floats were very impressive for the sheer grandeur they exuded.

Members from the Karnataka Goan Association, the Kanara Catholic Association and the Catholic Club Members formed a majority of the audience who danced to the music of A26, a renowned band specifically called in from Goa.

The Goans know to party and how! The organizers had various attractive prizes to give away to best dressed participants, best dancers, best Couple and so on. With masks on their faces and other carnival wear, the guests had a frolicking time dancing till the party ended.

Dinner vouchers, holidays, gift hampers were up for grabs along with bumper prizes of two wheelers sponsored by TVS, one of the sponsors at the event. Kingfisher has been the main sponsor for this event through the years.

Goa is also known for its mouthwatering food. And the organizers ensured that all the Goan delicacies were available for the guests. From tangy Goan Sausages to Chicken Xacuti and the famous Pork Sorpotel…there was lots to please the tummy. The food arrangements were done by Opus, a leading restaurant in Bangalore.

About KGA: The Karnataka Goan Association (KGA) is a registered body having membership of all those people who hail from Goa; primarily to keep the culture, language and traditions alive.

Rakesh Shetty, even if you think that the Goa Carnival is 'foreign culture', I am going to celebrate it because I have the freedom to choose my own culture. I will do what I want to do as long as it is lawful and does not disturb anyone else. I'll celebrate Carnival, Valentine's Day, Oktoberfest, Halloween, Gay Pride Day and any other festival/occasion that I fancy.... That is the extent of the freedom that I enjoy.

We will pick and choose our own culture as we wish, no matter how foreign, alien or unrelated it may be.

*That* is what they meant when they talked about 'Freedom' in our constitution.

    Viva Goa, Viva Carnaval

    & Jai Hind!

Great! What a gig! Didn't imagine there were so many Goans here to make it a real carnival. They are truly the ones that enjoy life while the rest of society seemingly cannot relax and enjoy life. Probably today's worsening stress crises must be the reason.

I guess we all have the right to give our opinions and not everybody has to appreciate our culture but that does not stop a community from celebrating their cultural event.even i dont like other cultural events but as an Indian i respect the sentiments.

Rakesh Shetty is right.. Since it was a decent party organized by the well educated people we should not support this..
We should only support the Parties like Spring Zouk because it was hosted by the Indias so called culture lovers

What makes India a great Nation, is not because we have many Religions, but our acceptance & tolerance for each other and our co-existence in harmony. It's not because we have many cultures, but the celebration and appreciation of each others cultures. And its not because we have many diverse languages, but despite this we can understand and communicate with each other. Lets celebrate this !!!

I would like to congratulate Karnataka Goan Association (KGA)for organizing the "GOA CARNIVAL'. From the pictures shot by Mr.Vinod Lobo it seems it was a wonderful show with the beautiful costumes, dancing, singing and not forgetting the delicious mouthwatering Goan food. Bangloreans and others present at the carnival must have had a wonderful time. Only person I did not see in the picture were the ministers and VVIPS. KGA keep it up and keep the Goan heritage live forever no matter who opposes such lovely events.

We like anything stupid like "Made Snana" as Indian culture....!! Unless we come out of our shell and see the world, such stupid things will be Indian culture, but anything colourful and gives happiness to us is western culture.....!! We forget the fact that we are following western dress and western languages ... We call ourselves as vegetarians and drink milk, nowadays there are even eggs which are called as pure vegetarian....! I have not seen a plant so far which gives eggs......

I guess it is time for POLITICS to be shunned from RELIGION and CULTURAL EVENTS.

In Karnataka we have all other states associations showcasing their culture. Do we have associations in other states and we proudly say that we are Kannadigas ? I doubt since we are divided by many languages. Where ever we go we uphold our language.

India is a secular country. All minorities and majorities have equal rights. There is freedom of speech and expression in this democratic country. Rakesh Shetty's comment shows that he, as a citizen of India, does not understand the provisions of his own country. Any school boy who knows social-science would not agree with your comment. It is because of people like you, India has a bad reputation in the global arena.

How come people like you do not use the words 'foreign culture' to describe the usage of English Calendar, the English language or while wearing Shirt/Pant/Jeans and while using foreign-invented technological products like Internet, Computers, Laptops, Phones, TVs? Why don't you abstain from every element that is not homegrown and rather be like your fore-fathers or probably live like an ape-man or a cave-man?
I bet you neither understand English nor the sentiments of educated, rational people around you.

Mr.Rakesh if you feel that this is a foriegn culture, then why do you send your children to English Medium School. Send to your culture school. Here it shows the togetherness and not the culture. So enjoy and praise for their unity.
