Beltangady: Absconding accused held after 36 years in assault case

Beltangady, Jan 7: Police have taken into custody an accused who had been absconding for 36 years in connection with an assault case registered under the Dharmasthala police station limits.

The accused has been identified as Ravindra (56), a resident of Charmadi village. A warrant had been issued against him by the court for repeatedly failing to appear in the case. Acting on specific information that he was residing in Nallur of Karkala taluk, a team led by Dharmasthala police station PSI Samarth R Ganigere successfully traced and secured him.

After being taken into custody, the accused was produced before the Bantwal court, which ordered judicial custody.

The case dates back to 1989, when Ravindra, along with another accused, allegedly assaulted a man near the Charmadi Gate. A case was registered at the Beltangady police station in this regard. While the co-accused had appeared before the court and was subsequently acquitted, Ravindra remained absconding and failed to attend court proceedings for over three decades.

Police sources stated that Ravindra had worked in Pune and Belagavi, later got married, and after the death of his wife, had been living in Nallur.

The operation was carried out under the guidance of Beltangady DySP C K Rohini and the supervision of Beltangady circle inspector Ravi B S, with the Dharmasthala police playing a key role in the successful action.
