Little Andaman, Mar 31: The Surfing Federation of India on Tuesday announced the Little Andaman Pro 2026 – National Surf & SUP Championship as the opening event of India’s 2026 surfing season, scheduled to take place from April 9 to 12.

Set against the scenic backdrop of Butler Bay Beach, the four-day event will bring together the country’s top surfers and stand-up paddlers for the first major competition of the year. It also marks the debut of competitive surfing at this pristine and relatively unexplored destination.

Organised in collaboration with Andaman and Nicobar Tourism, the championship will feature Senior Division contests in both Surfing and Stand-Up Paddle (SUP), with participants from across India competing for top honours.

The event holds special significance as India prepares for its first-ever surfing campaign at the Asian Games 2026. The country recently secured its maiden quota spots at the Asian Surfing Championships and went on to earn the maximum allocation of four slots—two each in men’s and women’s categories—for the Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

Highlighting the importance of the event, Surfing Federation of India President Arun Vasu described it as a milestone for the sport’s growth in the country. He noted that expanding competitions to diverse coastal locations like Little Andaman will help athletes gain crucial experience across different wave conditions and strengthen India’s global competitiveness.

Butler Bay is widely regarded as one of India’s most promising surf spots, known for its reef breaks that produce long, clean waves—ideal for high-performance surfing. For Indian surfers accustomed to beach breaks, competing in such conditions offers a valuable opportunity to enhance technical skills and broaden their competitive exposure.

Beyond competition, the championship aims to spotlight the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as an emerging hub for surfing and ocean sports. With its clear waters, coral reefs, and consistent swells, the region is increasingly attracting attention from both athletes and tourism stakeholders.

The initiative is also expected to encourage local youth participation and promote sustainable development through sport, aligning with the islands’ ecological sensitivity.

Indian surfing has seen steady progress in recent years, including a historic team silver at the Asian Surfing Championships and multiple strong finishes at continental events, reflecting the country’s rising stature in the sport.

Adding to the momentum, the federation has unveiled an expanded 2026 competition calendar, featuring more events nationwide, including stops in traditional surf hubs like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The upcoming season will also introduce a Longboarding Division, opening new avenues for athletes specialising in classic surfing styles.

The Little Andaman Pro 2026 aims not only to kickstart the competitive season but also to celebrate surfing culture while promoting responsible tourism and environmental awareness.
