Bucharest, Apr 8: Renowned Romanian football figure Mircea Lucescu passed away at the age of 80 following a heart attack, according to a statement released by a Bucharest hospital on Tuesday.
The veteran coach had fallen ill around 10 days ago while preparing for a friendly match against Slovakia and had been hospitalised. Though his condition had reportedly stabilised and he was expected to be discharged, he suffered a fatal heart attack on Friday.

Born on July 29, 1945, in Bucharest, Lucescu emerged as one of Romania’s most influential football personalities, excelling both as a player and a coach. He was instrumental in guiding Romania to their first-ever appearance at the European Championship in 1984 during his initial tenure as national team coach.
Lucescu had recently been appointed head coach of the Romanian national team for a second stint in August 2024. His final match in charge came on March 26, when Romania’s hopes of qualifying for their first FIFA World Cup since 1998 were dashed following a 1-0 defeat to Turkey in the play-off semi-final.
During his playing career, Lucescu captained Romania at the 1970 FIFA World Cup and earned 65 international caps, scoring 10 goals as a right winger.
He also enjoyed a highly successful club coaching career across Europe, managing teams in Romania, Italy, Turkey, and Ukraine, and winning more than 30 titles.
Paying tribute, Romanian President Nicusor Dan described Lucescu as “one of the most respected figures in the history of Romanian and European football,” adding that his contribution had inspired generations and elevated Romanian football on the global stage.
Former club Galatasaray also expressed grief, recalling his achievements, including winning the UEFA Super Cup and a Turkish league title during his tenure.
Lucescu’s death marks the end of an era in Romanian football, with tributes pouring in from across the sporting world.
