Udupi, Apr 16: A massive voluntary blood donation camp was organized by Adarsha Hospital, Udupi, in collaboration with the District Government Hospital Blood Bank Unit and HDFC Bank Main Branch, Udupi, at the hospital premises on April 16.
The camp held from 9 Am to 2 Pm was inaugurated by Dr Ashok Kumar, president of IMA Udupi, along with other dignitaries by lighting the ceremonial lamp.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Ashok Kumar highlighted the importance of blood donation, calling it a noble act. He recalled the earlier challenges faced in the absence of blood banks. “In the past, we had to contact donors through landline phones, and finding rare blood groups was a difficult task. Now, with the availability of blood banks, the situation has improved. However, awareness about blood donation must increase. If every individual donates blood at least twice a year, there will be no shortage,” he said.
In his introductory remarks, Dr G S Chandrashekar, medical director of Adarsha Hospital, emphasized the critical need for voluntary blood donation. “Artificial blood has not yet been discovered, and hence such donation camps are essential. A single unit of blood can save a minimum of three lives. In many cases, patients’ families hesitate to donate blood, placing the responsibility on hospitals to arrange it. Camps like these help address such challenges and promote a sense of humanity and responsibility,” he noted.
Dr Veena, head, Blood Bank Unit, District Hospital, Udupi, described blood donation as a selfless service. She informed that the unit collects around 12,000 to 15,000 units of blood annually, made possible through the support of donors. She also outlined the eligibility criteria for donors, stating that hemoglobin levels should be above 12.5, body weight at least 45 kg, and donors must have had a minimum of six hours of sleep. She added that women should avoid donating during their menstrual cycle, and pregnant women or individuals with terminal illnesses are not eligible to donate. “Blood donation does not weaken the body; instead, it helps improve immunity while saving lives,” she said.
Anushree Acharya compered the event.
Vishnumoorthy Padubidri, general manager, HDFC Bank, head office, Udupi; Dr Pratibha, hospital staff member, HDFC bank staff members, students, donors and others were present on the occasion.
