Disaster management drill inaugurated at DKZP Govt High School, Sujeer

Mangaluru, Apr 24: Father Muller Nursing College Thumbay, along with National Service Scheme in collaboration with Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority, Mangalore University (Chair in Christianity), and gram panchayat Pudu successfully inaugurated Disaster Management Drill on April 22 at DKZP Government High School, Sujeer, Pudu. The programme aimed to create awareness and preparedness among students and the local community regarding disaster management.

The inaugural ceremony began with prayer and lighting of the traditional lamp in the presence of dignitaries, Fr Sylvester Vincent Lobo, administrator Father Muller Nursing College Thumbay, Dr Reena Wilma Frank principal, Father Muller Nursing College Thumbay, Dr George Sunil D’Souza head, chair in Christianity, Umar Faruk School Development president, Ruksana Banu panchayat president and Praveen K N Fire Station officer.

Dr Edveena Philip Monis extended a warm welcome to the gathering. The event was compered by Sneha and Lina Joshi, and the vote of thanks was delivered by Richelle Pinto. The chief guest, Fr Sylvester Vincent Lobo in his inaugural address, emphasised the growing importance awareness and preparedness regarding disaster management.

Fr George Sunil D’Souza spoke on the importance of emotional management during disasters. He emphasized that during emergencies, people often experience fear, panic, and confusion. Therefore, it is important to stay calm, think clearly, and support one another. He highlighted that emotional control helps in making decisions and reduces the impact of the disaster.

Praveen K N explained in detail the important roles of the fire department in handling different types of emergencies such as fire accidents, road traffic accidents, and rescue operations. He highlighted how the department is equipped with modern tools and trained personnel to respond quickly and effectively during emergencies. He educated the participants about the common causes of fire, methods of prevention, and safety measures to be followed during a fire outbreak. Practical guidance was given on the use of fire extinguishers and how to respond calmly and safely in emergency situations and the session was very informative and helped the participants understand the importance of fire and safety and, emergency preparedness.

The Event was facilitated by a team of experienced resource persons from the Fire station Pandeshwar, including Praveen, Harish K T, Sathish Kumar, Charan Patagar, Janty Chouhan and Dharma M. A mock drill was conducted by the fire extinguisher team to create awareness and enhance preparedness for fire emergencies. During this session, the team explained the different types of fire extinguishers and their specific uses for various classes of fire. They also demonstrated the correct methods of using fire extinguishers and techniques for controlling different types of fire. The drill was informative and helped participants understand practical fire safety measures, improving their confidence and readiness to respond effectively during emergencies.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from a total of 100 participants representing ASHA workers, auto drivers, panchayat representatives, local residents, teaching and non-teaching faculties of Father Muller Nursing College Thumbay and DKZP Government High School, Sujeer.

The entire programme was organised under the leadership of Dr Edveena Philip Monis (HOD, department of Community Health Nursing), Ambily V Vijaykumar, Yashashwini, Royston D’Silva. The programme culminated in the national anthem.
