Udupi, Apr 28: The cutting down of several fruit-bearing trees within the Deputy Commissioner’s office premises in Udupi has triggered strong backlash from environmentalists and the public.
The action follows an incident on April 24, when a staff member at the DC office reportedly died of electrocution while plucking mangoes from a tree within the premises. Following the tragedy, various organisations had urged the district administration to shift the overhead electric lines passing through the trees to a safer location.

However, instead of relocating the power lines, the administration has cut down numerous trees in the premises. Many of these trees had been bearing fruit for years and also served as shelter for several species of birds. The sudden felling has led to widespread criticism.
Environmental activist Ganesh Kundapur expressed anguish over the move, stating that it was deeply saddening to see long-grown trees being cut down in a matter of moments. He pointed out that such trees take years to grow and provide ecological and community benefits.
He further criticised the administration’s decision, saying that removing hazardous electric lines would have been a more appropriate solution. “Felling fruit-bearing trees instead of addressing the real issue is unacceptable,” he said, terming the act as inexcusable.
