Goa bans taxi parking in Panaji’s public lots to ease traffic congestion

Panaji, May 6: In a step aimed at reducing traffic congestion, the Goa government has prohibited taxis from parking in general parking areas across the capital city of Panaji.

The order was issued by North Goa Collector Ankit Yadav following recommendations from the traffic police. Authorities noted that heavy vehicle inflow and limited off-street parking have led to widespread roadside parking, narrowing carriageways and worsening congestion.

Under the new rules, tourist taxis will be allowed to park only in designated stands. Additionally, taxis picking up or dropping passengers cannot halt for more than three minutes in public areas.

The decision was finalised after consultations involving the traffic cell of Goa Police, the Regional Transport Office, and the Corporation of the City of Panaji, all of whom supported the move.

Officials clarified that taxis are not permitted to occupy parking spaces while waiting for customers, a practice often seen outside hotels. However, exceptions may apply for short-term parking when taxis arrive with passengers who briefly step out.

Traffic authorities highlighted that congestion in Panaji has been aggravated by double parking and lack of proper signage. Several signboards were removed during ongoing smart city works and are yet to be reinstalled, leading to frequent violations such as vehicles entering no-entry zones.

To address this, the administration has directed installation of new traffic signboards across key locations to regulate vehicular movement and improve compliance.

The move is expected to streamline traffic flow and free up parking space for residents and visitors in the busy city center.
