Mumbai, May 9: Acclaimed filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker has been appointed as the Festival Director for the 57th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), which will be held in Goa.
The announcement regarding his appointment was made on Friday by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
Gowariker is widely recognised for directing celebrated films such as Lagaan, Swades and Jodhaa Akbar. His cinema is known for combining strong narratives with historical themes and socially relevant storytelling.

Among his most notable achievements, Lagaan earned an Academy Award nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category, bringing international recognition to Indian cinema.
Reacting to his appointment, Gowariker expressed gratitude and described the opportunity as a matter of great pride. He said his association with IFFI spans several decades, beginning with his first visit to the festival in 1984 and continuing through various roles over the years, including serving as the Jury President for International Cinema in 2024.
He also stated that leading a festival with such a rich legacy carries both honour and responsibility. He added that he looks forward to collaborating closely with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting as well as the Goa government to further strengthen the festival’s global stature.
Established in 1952, the International Film Festival of India is regarded as one of Asia’s most prominent film festivals and serves as a major platform for celebrating international cinema and promoting cultural exchange through films.
Apart from his latest appointment, Gowariker also recently served as the chairperson of the Feature Film Jury for the 71st National Film Awards.
