Panaji, May 31: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised a retired schoolteacher from Goa for addressing a drinking water shortage in his village and highlighted the state's traditional kokum-based beverages during his monthly Mann Ki Baat radio programme.

During the broadcast, Modi lauded Balkrishna Ayya, a retired teacher from Loliem in Canacona, for resolving a long-standing water crisis in the Hundolle-Madditalap area.

The Prime Minister said Ayya took the initiative after observing that nearly 20 to 25 households were facing difficulties in accessing drinking water. Acting independently, he dug a step-well that reached water at a depth of around 40 metres, installed a pump, and laid pipelines to provide water to nearby homes.

Modi described the effort as a powerful example of individual initiative and community service, noting that such contributions can bring meaningful change at the grassroots level.

Referring to the ongoing summer season and heatwave conditions in several parts of the country, the Prime Minister also mentioned Goa’s traditional beverages, including kokum drink and Sol Kadi, as refreshing options for staying hydrated. He urged people to follow official advisories and take precautions during periods of extreme heat.

Speaking about summer fruits, Modi highlighted India’s rich variety of mangoes and described them as one of the country’s most cherished seasonal produce. He also praised farmers for preserving the nation’s agricultural heritage and promoting diverse mango varieties.

While mentioning popular mango varieties such as Hapus and Alphonso from the Konkan region, the Prime Minister did not refer to Goa’s GI-tagged Mankurad mango, which is widely regarded as the state's signature variety.
