Sanguem, Jun 4: Residents of Potrem ward under the Bhati Village Panchayat in Sanguem taluka have expressed serious concern over the deteriorating condition of a bridge in the area, urging authorities to undertake immediate repairs to prevent a potential tragedy.
Constructed nearly three decades ago, the bridge serves as a vital link for residents travelling to Sanguem and neighbouring areas. Locals, however, allege that the structure has been neglected for years, with little maintenance carried out by the Public Works Department (PWD).

The situation is said to be particularly alarming as the bridge is located near a sharp bend, posing a risk to both motorists and pedestrians. Overgrown bushes on either side of the bridge have further reduced visibility, increasing the danger for commuters using the stretch.
Former Bhati panch Manoj Paryekar voiced concern over the worsening state of the bridge. He recalled that repair work was carried out on one side of the structure more than a decade ago during the tenure of former Sanguem MLA Prasad Gaonkar.
According to Paryekar, residents were assured at the time that the bridge would undergo comprehensive repairs and strengthening work. However, no major restoration efforts have been undertaken since then.
He pointed out that portions of the concrete covering the bridge pillars have already broken away, exposing parts of the structure and making it vulnerable to further deterioration.
Warning that continued neglect could lead to serious consequences, Paryekar said the bridge could face the risk of collapse if urgent repairs are not carried out.
He also drew attention to low-hanging live electricity cables on one side of the bridge and urged the electricity department to address the issue immediately, citing safety concerns for commuters and nearby residents.
Expressing frustration over the prolonged inaction, Paryekar warned that he and local youth would be compelled to launch an agitation if authorities fail to take prompt corrective measures.
Residents have appealed to the PWD and other concerned departments to prioritise repair and maintenance work on the bridge to ensure public safety and prevent accidents.
