Excessive earbud use may pose serious risks to hearing health

Mumbai, Jun 5: Health experts are cautioning people against prolonged and high-volume use of earbuds and earphones, warning that excessive exposure to loud sounds can lead to permanent hearing damage and other ear-related problems.

With the growing popularity of wireless earbuds among youngsters and working professionals, doctors have observed an increase in cases of hearing fatigue, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), ear infections and gradual hearing loss.

According to specialists, listening to music or audio at high volumes for extended periods can damage the delicate hair cells inside the inner ear. Once damaged, these cells do not regenerate, making hearing loss irreversible.

Experts recommend following the "60/60 rule" — listening at no more than 60 per cent of maximum volume for no longer than 60 minutes at a stretch. Taking regular breaks and avoiding the use of earbuds while sleeping can also help protect hearing health.

Medical professionals further advise maintaining proper ear hygiene and cleaning earbuds regularly, as accumulated bacteria and moisture can increase the risk of infections.

As digital devices become an integral part of daily life, health experts stress the importance of responsible earbud use to prevent long-term hearing complications and safeguard overall ear health.
