Beirut, Jun 12: Saudi Arabia has announced the lifting of its five-year ban on imports from Lebanon, signalling a significant improvement in relations between the two countries and offering a potential boost to Lebanon's struggling economy.
The ban was initially imposed in 2021 after Saudi authorities alleged that shipments of Lebanese fruits and vegetables were being used to smuggle drugs into the kingdom. In one high-profile case, Saudi officials said they seized more than five million Captagon pills concealed inside a consignment of pomegranates from Lebanon.

Later that year, Riyadh expanded the restrictions to cover all Lebanese imports following remarks by then Lebanese Information Minister George Kordahi criticising the Saudi-led military campaign in Yemen.
The diplomatic rift was also linked to Saudi Arabia's concerns over the influence of the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement in Lebanon and the broader regional rivalry between Riyadh and Tehran.
In a statement, Saudi Arabia's Foreign Ministry said the decision to lift the ban was taken under the direction of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and followed "positive steps" undertaken by the Lebanese government. However, the statement did not specify the measures involved.
Over the past year, Lebanese authorities have announced plans to disarm non-state armed groups, including Hezbollah, as part of broader efforts to strengthen state institutions and improve regional ties.
Welcoming the decision, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun thanked the Saudi leadership, saying the move would help revive the country's economy and provide much-needed support to Lebanese producers and exporters.
The current Lebanese government, which came to power with a reform agenda, has been actively seeking to restore relations with Gulf nations. Officials have also been encouraging the return of Gulf tourists and investment as part of efforts to support economic recovery following years of financial crisis and political instability.
The lifting of the import ban is being viewed as a major diplomatic breakthrough and a positive step towards deeper economic cooperation between Lebanon and Gulf countries.
