Water crisis deepens in Bicholim villages as pipeline leakages trigger massive wastage

Bicholim, Jun 21: Water scarcity is intensifying across several villages in Bicholim taluka, with residents attributing the worsening situation to numerous leakages in water supply pipelines that are causing significant wastage.

Leakages have been reported at several locations, including the Vhalshim–Vathadev bypass road, areas near the ITI opposite the Housing Board, and along adjoining roads. Locals said that prompt identification and repair of these damaged pipelines could substantially improve water availability across the region.

Social activist Raam Shirgaonkar from Kumbharwada in Bordem said a considerable amount of water could be saved if authorities acted swiftly to plug the leaks. He pointed out that Kumbharwada has been facing irregular water supply for several years, forcing residents to rely heavily on a single well during periods of severe shortage.

Residents Sanjay Kharbe and Anil Usapkar said Bicholim frequently experiences acute water scarcity, particularly when major pipelines burst, disrupting the already strained supply system.

Bicholim Municipal Council Chairperson Vijaykumar Natekar said the civic body has been attempting to mitigate the crisis by deploying water tankers whenever shortages occur.

The problem has also affected the Velguem–Pale region, where residents have struggled with inadequate water supply for years. Suresh Bayekar of Surla said the situation was traditionally managed through tanker water sourced from Surla, an area known for its abundant natural water resources.

However, delayed monsoon rains this year have aggravated the crisis, drying up agricultural fields and forcing farmers to depend on pipeline-based irrigation to sustain their crops.

Deelip Desai of Sal described the situation in his village as alarming, stating that frequent interruptions in tap water supply have compelled residents to depend on a well located near the Mahadev-Bhumika Temple.

Frustration among villagers has also sparked protests. Residents of Usap village have twice marched to the Public Works Department (PWD) office in Bicholim to highlight the persistent shortages. During the second protest, a group of housewives staged a demonstration inside the office premises, demanding immediate action.

Meanwhile, Ladfe panch member Lavu Kotkar said the village panchayat has been making continuous efforts to address water-related concerns as they arise. He stressed that timely intervention and better coordination between local bodies and government departments are essential to minimise the impact of water shortages on residents.
