Dubai, Jun 24: After years of planning and anticipation, the UAE is set to take a major step forward in public transportation as Etihad Rail prepares to launch its long-awaited passenger train services on June 30, ushering in a new era of inter-emirate connectivity.
The launch marks the beginning of an introductory operational phase for the country's ambitious national railway project, which is expected to eventually redefine how residents and visitors travel across the Emirates. Designed as one of the UAE’s largest infrastructure initiatives, the railway aims to provide a faster, more efficient and environmentally sustainable alternative to road transport while supporting long-term economic growth.

Rather than opening the entire network at once, Etihad Rail will adopt a phased rollout strategy to ensure smooth operations, safety and seamless integration with existing transport systems. Officials have said this gradual approach follows international best practices and will help maintain high standards of reliability and passenger service as operations expand.
The initial phase is expected to prioritise three key destinations — Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Fujairah — due to their strategic importance and strong commuter demand. The first stations likely to become operational include Mohammed Bin Zayed City in Abu Dhabi, Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai and Fujairah Station.
Once fully completed, the network will become the UAE’s first integrated national railway system, connecting 11 cities and regions across the country. These include Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Fujairah, Al Sila', Al Dhannah, Al Mirfa, Madinat Zayed, Mezaira'a, Al Faya and Al Dhaid. Additional stations will be introduced gradually as the network expands.
Authorities believe the project will significantly improve mobility between emirates, strengthen regional connectivity and encourage domestic tourism by making travel more convenient and accessible.
Ticket prices for passenger services have not yet been officially announced. However, industry experts expect fares to be competitively priced between intercity bus services and the cost of travelling by private car, making the trains an attractive option for commuters, business travellers and tourists.
Analysts estimate that a one-way journey between Abu Dhabi and Dubai could cost between Dh40 and Dh80, though official pricing details are still awaited.
Passengers will eventually be able to purchase tickets digitally through a dedicated website and mobile application that Etihad Rail is expected to introduce closer to the launch. The railway is also expected to integrate with existing public transport systems, allowing travellers to seamlessly connect with metro networks, buses, taxis and ride-hailing services.
Etihad Rail has already revealed several features that passengers can expect onboard. The trains have been designed for modern intercity travel and will offer Wi-Fi connectivity, individual charging ports, comfortable seating arrangements, dedicated family areas and guaranteed seating for all passengers.
Each train will accommodate up to 400 passengers and will utilise advanced railway technology that complies with international safety and quality standards.
Officials say the service is intended to provide a practical alternative to long-distance driving by reducing travel stress and eliminating concerns about traffic congestion.
One of the biggest advantages of the new network will be the reduction in travel time. Previous estimates suggest that journeys between Abu Dhabi and Dubai will take approximately one hour, while trips between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah will take around 90 minutes.
Trains are expected to operate at speeds of up to 200 kilometres per hour, making rail one of the fastest modes of transport between several major destinations in the UAE.
Beyond convenience, the project is expected to deliver significant economic and environmental benefits. Authorities believe it will reduce dependence on road transport, support the country's sustainability goals, stimulate tourism and strengthen links between communities throughout the Emirates.
Officials have compared its potential impact to that of the Dubai Metro, which transformed urban transportation after its introduction more than a decade ago.
With freight operations already running successfully since 2023, the launch of passenger services marks the next major chapter in the UAE’s railway journey and is widely regarded as one of the most significant transportation developments in the nation’s history.
