SIR exercise: EC offers alternative mapping route for voters missing from 2002 rolls

Bengaluru, Jul 3: Several voters in Karnataka have raised concerns that they are unable to trace their names or those of their parents in the 2002 electoral roll, which is being used as the base year for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the filling of enumeration forms.

In response, a senior official from the office of the chief electoral officer, Karnataka, has issued clarifications on alternative options available to affected voters. The Election Commission has also announced that the draft electoral roll will be published on August 5.

Karnataka chief electoral officer S Yogeshwar said that if a voter is unable to locate their name or that of a family member in the 2002 electoral roll, they may either opt for mapping their details with a relative whose name appears in the list or submit Form-6 to register afresh as a new voter.

He further clarified that if a voter’s name is present in the 2025 electoral roll but not in the 2002 list, they must provide details of any one relative whose name is listed in the 2002 SIR roll. The 2002 electoral roll is accessible to the public via the website https://voters.eci.gov.in/searchInSIR.

The mapping provision allows voters to link their details with relatives from either the paternal or maternal side. The relative may be a registered voter anywhere in India. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will verify such details through a centralised portal.

Officials added that after publication of the draft electoral roll, voters will be required to submit additional documents only if they receive notices for further verification. In such cases, they must furnish any one of the 12 documents approved by the Election Commission.

Yogeshwar said objections can be filed after the draft roll is released on August 5. Till September 4, voters may submit objections along with a mandatory self-declaration and one of the 12 approved documents using Form-6 to secure inclusion in the final electoral roll.
