Power outage sparks protest in Sullia villages

Sullia, Jul 6: Residents of Jalsoor and Kanakamajalu villages in Sullia taluk have expressed outrage after electricity supply was disrupted following the locking of a Gang Operated Switch (GOS) by the Mangaluru Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM) at Mavinakatte near Adkar-Vinobanagar in Jalsoor village.

According to local residents, the power supply line serving Kanakamajalu and Jalsoor from the Puttur side developed a fault on Saturday afternoon, resulting in a disruption in electricity supply. Under normal circumstances, power can be restored through an alternate line from the Sullia side using the GOS installed at Mavinakatte.

However, residents alleged that officials of the Sullia MESCOM division locked the GOS, reportedly citing concerns that diverting power through the alternate line could affect electricity supply to the Sullia region.

As a result, electricity supply to Jalsoor and Kanakamajalu villages remained suspended, triggering protests by residents who demanded that the lock be removed and power supply restored immediately.

Locals said the disruption began on Saturday and questioned the decision to keep the alternate supply route inaccessible despite the availability of the switching facility.

Attempts to contact MESCOM officials for their response were unsuccessful. The utility has not yet issued an official statement on the incident.
