From Kolhapur to Paris: Leena Nair's remarkable rise to the helm of Chanel

Daijiworld Media Network - London

London, Jul 19: The trajectory of Leena Nair from a traditional upbringing in Maharashtra to the highest office of a century-old French luxury powerhouse is nothing short of extraordinary. Currently serving as the global ceo of Chanel, her journey is a testament to the power of blending ambition with deep-rooted empathy.

Breaking traditional barriers

Born in Kolhapur on June 11, 1969, Nair's early life was shaped by conventional expectations. When she expressed a desire for higher education, her father agreed on the condition that she tie the knot by the age of 23. True to her word, she met Kumar Nair and agreed to marry him after a brief 30-minute conversation. However, marriage was merely a milestone, not a limitation, to her soaring aspirations. Today, the couple shares two sons, and her professional journey continues to shatter glass ceilings.

Despite the rarity of women in technical fields during the early 1990s, she pursued electronics and telecommunications engineering at Walchand College in Sangli. Realising her true passion was in organisational culture, she joined XLRI Jamshedpur, graduating with a gold medal in 1992.

Starting as a management trainee at Hindustan Unilever, she quickly made history as the first woman to work the night shift on a factory floor, immersing herself in operations historically reserved for men. Over the next two decades, she steadily climbed the ranks. By 2016, she was appointed as the chief human resources officer at Unilever, becoming the youngest, first female, and first Asian to hold the position, overseeing a workforce of 160,000 across 190 countries.

Leading with a listening ear

In a move that surprised the fashion industry in December 2021, Chanel named Nair as its new global ceo. As an Indian-origin executive from the consumer goods sector, she was an unconventional choice for the historic French brand. Instead of making sweeping executive decisions upon arrival, she embarked on an extensive listening tour, visiting retail locations, factories, and regional offices to understand the heartbeat of the organisation.

Under her guidance, Chanel not only thrives financially but also directs over $125 million annually towards global initiatives aimed at empowering women. Nair strongly advocates for compassionate leadership, taking the time to learn the names and personal stories of thousands of her employees, proving that business decisions must always consider the human beings they impact.

Five pillars of leadership

Nair frequently emphasises leading with both the head and the heart. She outlines five core principles for aspiring leaders:

  • Compassion: Fostering an inclusive environment where every individual, especially marginalized voices, feels seen.

  • Audacity: Cultivating the courage to dream beyond one's origins and circumstances.

  • Optimism: Building a resilient mindset rooted in hope, positivity, and gratitude.

  • Curiosity and humility: Adopting a lifelong learning approach and frequently utilizing phrases like, "Help me understand."

  • Knowing your purpose: Staying anchored to your core values during turbulent times.

A legacy beyond titles

Nair's human-centric approach has garnered international acclaim. Consistently ranked among the world's most powerful women, she was recently honoured with the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Prince William in 2025 for her services to the retail industry.

Despite steering a $60 billion luxury empire, Nair's narrative remains focused on people, values, and possibilities, proving that true success is ultimately measured by the positive impact left on others.
